Comprised of the three islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix, the U.S. Virgins are a little bit of Americana in the Caribbean. Actually purchased from Denmark in 1917, the three islands today are well-populated by locals and tourists alike. St. Thomas, with some fine restaurants and hotels, has been built up into a duty-free shopping mecca for thousands of daily visitors from the cruise ships. St. John is more mountainous with many fabulous beaches, most-notably, the crowded Trunk Bay. Actually more than one-half of the island is a National Park with the main town, the sleepy Cruz Bay, being the gateway for one million annual visitors compared with only 3,000 inhabitants who live there year-round.
